Contact across cultures

Problems in international business relationships are not always caused by language difficulties.

Doing business with people of other nationalities involves more than learning foreign languages. There are often cultural differences people of different national backgrounds. These differences sometimes complicate business relationships negotiations. It important to be aware your own cultural tendencies as as those of your business partners.

The areas which we need to be aware include body language, gesture, socializing customs, attitudes punctuality and dress, business practice. It is useful to know, example, that the British hands less often than other European people, that Americans first names often than many other nationalities and that the Japanese that harmony and consensus very important.

We find out about other cultures reading and talking to with experience. When we other countries, it is important to good observers and listeners. We avoid criticising other cultures and realise that we all have similar problems but different ways of dealing with them.
